Map out the World's Largest Mind Map
|
The World’s Largest Mind Map, featuring Singapore’s history, culture
and achievements, was unveiled at the Singapore Institute of Management
(SIM) to mark the opening of the world’s first Mind Map Festival.
1,600 students from 15 schools across Singapore filled in the
three-storey high Mind Map, pieced together on a large canvas sheet,
about the size of two badminton courts.
Mind Mapping is a memory aid, which was invented by Mr Tony Buzan, 65.
“I was teaching a dyslexic boy how to read a Mind Map, and he
exclaimed, ‘This is how I think!’”, said Mr Buzan. “Mind Mapping
benefits people from all walks of life… it’s a reflection of how our
brain works.”
Today, Mind Mapping is taught to many professionals, including
curriculum planners from the Ministry of Education, and employees from
the Singapore General Hospital. Over 4000 teachers have been taught
Mind Mapping over the past decade. Through them, about a tenth of
students in Singapore have learnt the technique.
“I went for a Mind Mapping course way back in primary school to aid my
English composition skills and for brainstorming ideas. I use Mind
Mapping even today because I can plan more efficiently with it”, said
Ms Chin Guiying, 18, a Mass Communications student at Ngee Ann
Polytechnic.
“Mind Maps can be used for management too, not just in education”, said
Mr Lee Kwok Cheng, CEO of SIM Pte. Ltd. He said that he uses Mind
Mapping to solve problems during meetings, and even to record meeting
minutes. It is also part of SIM’s core curriculum.
Mr Henry Toi, CEO of Buzan Centre Asia said, “Many people use what they
think is Mind Mapping, but actually is just concept mapping. Then they
say it doesn’t work. Of course it doesn’t work – it’s not Mind Mapping!”

The BRAND’S SIM Mind Map Festival runs from November 13 to 30, and the
Global Mind Map Conference is being held on November 14 – 15 at the SIM
Headquarters Atrium at 461 Clementi Road.
